ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH??

Well it’s a good question.

Getting a Return-On-Investment can be a daunting task as how do you know, how do you measure it, what does it really mean and to who?

For me knowing what my technology can do and how it fits in to the eco-system around me is part of the foundation to success. Essentially, knowing how things work allows me to do my job better. For the business it’s about seeing increased productivity and revenues of their employees. When you think about it, those lay hand in hand.  A happy user, with the knowledge of how to get the best from their tools, is the road to increased productivity and revenues.

We all want to do our job as effectively as possible, to make it as easy as possible but at the same time achieve results. No one wants access to information to be a long and drawn out process and we certainly don’t want repetition or technical difficulties to add complexity to what we have to do. We need to know the capabilities so we can be effective and get the job done – simple.

The key to this is achieving excellent user adoption of well thought out technology. It all centres around knowledge, understanding and training. Now, I don’t know about you but when I’m trained, about 50% of what I’m told on the day sinks in. The daily distractions, resistance to or excitement of change can all cause our minds to restrict input or it could just be general information overload. On top of that most individuals only have a 20-minute attention span [mine is about 10, but I’m in Sales so that’s standard]. So, even with Firefly’s on average 98% attendance rate it can be tricky when you only have one shot to really get all the information in.

What most users tend to do is use what they remember of the essentials, lose the handouts, then attempt to figure out the rest. If they can’t then they just work without it – inefficiently. But that’s not ideal, as you are not getting the most from the technology the business invested in.

What should happen is that you bring the professional/expert back in to deliver an additional, more in-depth overview. Once the users have spent some time using their device their confidence will have grown, the upgrade or relocation chaos will have passed and they will be happy with the basics and therefore open-minded to learn more. Then it’s time to learn the good stuff, the integration aspects with other technologies and how it really can make life easier and make a real difference. This is what the users and the business want to achieve so that R.O.I. can be truly realised.
